Deuteronomy 5: Touching 7 Generations
--------
I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
---------
There are many choices that shape lives for generations to come. This passage is not really a threat or a promise, but a statement of reality.
Native Americans call this the rule of seven generations. Elders say that we should consider the effects of every action, not just for ourselves, but for seven generations to come. If our actions are echoed and amplified down through the decades, will the world be a better place?
Some elders say we are not at the start of those seven generations, but the middle. Our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents shed blood, sweat, and tears to provide the opportunities we have today. Many died before they saw the promise they hoped for, but they trusted that their sacrifice would be blessed because we would walk in a good way.
Those ancestors are watching—cheering us on—praying that our choices will honor them today. They are still blessed when we fulfill their dreams and visions.
As I wander through the backwoods I often come upon old farms or home sites. Cabins and barns have long since returned to the earth. Even the chimney has fallen and crumbled. But one can still tell where the old foot paths and wagon roads were.
The earth remembers every footfall. The flowers still bloom where an unseen hand planted them, perhaps seven generations ago. The land has not forgotten that loving touch.
The land will remember every step you take today.
Seven generations will feel your touch.
Show them how to walk in a good way.
Let them be touched by your love.
