Advent Devotion: John 1:5
Overcoming Darkness (Part 2)
------------------------------
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
------------------------------
When I was a child I thought the darkness had power. It transformed the tree branches outside my window into monstrous fingers clawing in the wind. It created black corners in my room full of who knows what dangers.
Now I know the darkness has no power of its own. It is only the absence of light.
But even as adults we often believe the darkness has power of its own--power to make this world a dangerous place--power to create conspiracies and monsters we cannot comprehend.
The truth is that the darkness has no power of its own. It can deceive our hearts and minds into believing in the shadows but the light of one single candle destroys them. We do not need a floodlight to destroy the powers of darkness--just a glimmer of hope.
2020 has been a year of shadows. Will they have power to cast a pall over 2021?
Not if you carry one single glimmer of hope. That is all in the world we need.
