Thursday Scripture: Judges 7
100 to 1 Faith
-------------
Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard.
They blew their trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands. The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars.
Grasping the torches in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!”
While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.
-------------
It's been almost 20 years since God taught me that faith starts when things look impossible. My wife had melanoma of the brain, and the odds of her surviving a few months were 100 to 1.
Gideon had the odds in his favor. He gave an altar call, and 30,000 came forward. If I ever preach a sermon like that, I'm going to just drop the mic and walk away. Boom. Done.
But God said, "No. If you think the odds are in your favor you won't count on me to win the battle."
God cut Gideon's army down from 30,000 to 300--and then he armed them with jars, trumpets, and glorified candles. The odds were definitely against them.
But 100 to 1 odds aren't a bad deal, when God is the one. God won that battle for them, and God is our only hope in the battles we face today.
(Oh yeah... and almost 20 years later, armed with faith and prayer, Barbara is still beating the odds. Thanks be to God for every miraculous day.)
