Wednesday Scripture: Psalm 63
Thirsting for God
-----------------
You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.
-----------------
My daughter, the health a fitness expert, recommends that I drink 32 gallons of water a day.
Or maybe every hour, I forget which.
She constantly reminds me--
"Your body can't tell the difference between hungry and thirsty."
She raises a valid point.
How DO you know when you are thirsty?
Our five senses do not include "thirsty."
So she insists, sometimes we need to be reminded to get a glass of water.
I don't understand why a basic need wouldn't trigger a basic reflex.
But I have to admit--as I journey through this dry and weary land, my spiritual reserves often get dried up.
I need to be reminded to return to the springs of living water. When I am dried up and weary, my reflex is to blame traffic.
Or the Demicans. Or the Republicrats.
Or somebody else who just got on my last good nerve.
Thank God, the Psalms are there to remind me to drink from the wells of salvation.
When I confess that my tank is empty and tell God I'm thirsty, God is faithful to fill me up and restore my soul.
So if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go pray for God to fill my spirit with the living water of the Holy Spirit.
Then I better get started on those 32 gallons.
My daughter will be checking...
