Wednesday Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1
The Foolishness of God
------------
The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing--
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom,
and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
------------
The cross of Jesus wasn't a gold ornament on a necklace.
It wasn't cool goth embroidery on jeans.
It wasn't put on top of steeples.
It was the electric chair
The lethal injection
The hangman's noose
The executioner's axe
It didn't make sense to grow a religious movement around a government-sanctioned symbol of capital punishment.
The cross was the most cruel way the power elite could show the masses who was boss.
But when the world has done its worst and failed--
When Jesus and all Creation laugh on Easter--
What more can they do to stop us?
The ultimate power is not death or cruelty or terror.
The ultimate power is love.
Redeeming, forgiving, resurrecting, mad, crazy love.
That's still the ultimate power.
No virus can stop it.
Maybe one day we'll wear images of the Corona virus to celebrate our victory.
That would be crazy, right?
Or maybe we'll just keep wearing the cross.
That's as crazy as it gets.
And in God's hands, that's wisdom.

In the cross of Christ I glory
Towering o'er the wrecks of time
All the light of sacred story
Gathers round its head sublime.
