Thursday Scripture: Ecclesiastes 7
Moderation
-----------
Do not be overrighteous,
neither be overwise—
why destroy yourself?
Do not be overwicked,
and do not be a fool—
why die before your time?
It is good to grasp the one
and not let go of the other.
Whoever fears God will avoid all extremes.
-------------
Moderates do not make good press.
Zealotry and extremism get all the headlines.
My church has always embraced moderation--trying to see both sides of an issue.
Sometimes this drives me to distraction.
C'MON! Pick a side! Take a stand!
Say SOMETHING without compromise!
But there is timeless wisdom here.
Too much of anything will make you crazy.
Too much power.
Too much wealth.
Too much wisdom.
And yes, too much religion.
This scripture even tells us to hang on to a little wickedness.
Wait, did I really read that in the BIBLE?
That can't be right, can it?
Maybe it's just honest truth.
Carl Jung said we human critters can be altogether good...
Or altogether honest...
But NOT both.
To know yourself is to know your dark side.
Only when you are honest about your own demons can you truly celebrate your salvation...
And be truly sane. Whole. Shalom.
So don't try to be too good today.
It will make you crazy.
And It might make headlines.
Be honest with yourself,
And know God loves you right where you are.

Lord, Lord, Lord
you've been blessing me
I can tell the world
when I woke early this morning
I was clothed in my right mind
when looked all around me
my family was doing fine
I wanna thank him for how he kept me
thank him, he never left me
I can tell world
tell the world that I am blessed
that I am blessed
