Engraved on His Hands

Shout for joy, you heavens;
rejoice, you earth;
burst into song, you mountains!
For the Lord comforts his people
and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.
But God's people said, “The Lord has forsaken me,
the Lord has forgotten me.”
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget,
I will not forget you!
See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.

God loves us with a mother's indelible love.
Your name is written on the palm of his hand--
Not with ink, but with a sharp stylus that cuts the letters deep.
Your name is engraved.
When the world looks at the hands of Christ, they see nail prints.
But when you look closely, you will see your name.

Bind me to you with a mother's love, O God,
And let me trace my name upon your hand.
