Genesis 2: Sabbath
-----------
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

The rabbis said that the Sabbath was the reason for Creation. Just as the sun and moon give rhythm to life, the sabbath gives rhythm to the soul.
There are seasons of the soul. Native people call this the Medicine Wheel. Right now we are in winter. Creation is preparing for new life, but first it must rest in a silent, icy mantle.
The Medicine Wheel says this is the season of death, wisdom, and humor. I wish I could tell you that Spring makes you wise. It doesn't. The Cherokee word for Wisdom and Winter is the same. Wisdom does not come from pining for Spring, but from embracing the deep knowledge of Sabbath.
The past year has been a harsh Sabbath for all of us. It has been a Winter of the soul. But it is a preparation for new life. Pray that it also brings wisdom... and humor.
The Sabbath is good.
