Advent Devotion, John 1:11
Receiving What God Offers
---------------------------
He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
---------------------------
It's easy to take a cheap shot here.
The Word became flesh, and "THEY" missed it! How could "THEY" be so stooooh-puhd?
But the Gospel of John is kinda specific about one thing. ALL of Jesus' friends are kinda dense. They ALL miss the point, over and over and over.
Hmmm... You and I count ourselves among Jesus' friends. What does that imply about us? SURELY John wasn't talking about US? Surely that was only about THEM.
But as I look in the rear view mirror of my life, I confess that I've wasted far too many days longing for what I wanted, instead of celebrating what God was giving. Like a dense disciple--or a spoiled child--I have fussed about what I thought was missing, instead of rejoicing for that day.
This may not be the year you wanted. It may not be the election you hoped for. It may not be the weather you like. And people may be getting on your very last good nerve.
But Christ is coming to his own, today. An irreplaceable, non-returnable gift of 24 amazing hours is coming to you today. Don't be a dense disciple. Open the gift.
