Advent Devotion: John 1:6-7
Bearing Witness to the Light
----------------------------
There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.
----------------------------
We've been talking about light overcoming darkness. In Jewish thought, the light was the truth--and it took at least two witnesses to establish a story as truth.
In 2020 we have been treated to a display of alternate truths in our courts of law. But this isn't truth for left or right, black or white, Jew or Greek, Native or immigrant. This is God's Truth for ALL people.
It seems that in our current climate, even unity is a divisive idea. You may recall how Michael Jordan was chided for saying, "Republicans buy shoes too." How dare he suggest that people could be united by high quality shoes?
The Word says that this Light we call Christ is a point of unity, for ALL people. But we need TWO witnesses to testify. John came as one witness. Who is the other?
It's you.
So long as you and John testify that Christ is the light for ALL people, then we have found a truth the world cannot deny.
Seems like we all need that in 2020, more than ever.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming
Here came the wise men from Orient land
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger
In all our trials born to be our friend
Fall on your knees, oh hear the angel voices
Oh night divine, oh night when Christ was born
Oh night divine, oh night divine
