Thursday Scripture: Psalm 97
Mountains Melt Like Wax
-------------------------
The Lord is king! Let the earth rejoice;
let the many coastlands be glad!
Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
Fire goes before him,
His lightnings light up the world;
the earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
before the Lord of all the earth.
----------------------------------
Sometimes Creation reminds us that we are but a tiny speck in the cosmos, dependent entirely upon God's grace for our survival
The vast heavens above and the mighty rolling sea bear witness
But if you want to see the awesome power of creation, there is nothing like watching an active volcano at work
As the ash rumbles into the sky, lightning crackles on the jagged peaks
The mountains melt like wax in the Hand of the Creator
At times we suffer from the delusion that the earth is ours to use as we see fit, like clay in the potter's hands
The voices of lightning and magma show that earth's power is too great for us
It could sweep us away without notice
We could not even come near it and live to tell
But here's the thing:
That awesome, lethal, untamed power is the power of Creation
The very land where you stand was once formed in that same fiery vortex
The ONLY reason there is room for you to survive is that in the beginning God moved into that fiery hell to speak light and life, times and seasons, rhymes and reasons for life
The awesome power of Creation is still at work
And God's power to move upon Creation to make room for life is still at work as well
Next time you think your world is too much of a mess--
Or your life is too messed up--
For God to make order out of the chaos--
Go watch the mountains melting like wax in the Creator's hands
Relax. The Creator is still at work.
